While trying to learn how to use styles, I observed puzzling behavior in two ways: styles were changing that I had not changed, and images seemed to be moved around in table cells. I created this document so that I could see how each style worked, and, to my surprise, found that the Normal style affected other styles in an unpredictable fashion.

In recent webinars, Maple makes much of the new document mode, saying that now the power of a word processor is available in a math tool. I can understand the emphasis; I am interested in Maple for the first time because it is easier to produce documents that are easy to follow. But Maple should include documents such as this one, and note the peculiarities of the document interface so that new users do not have to "discover" these unusual behaviors for themselves.

I have placed comments in the file that reflect my current understanding. If anyone knows better what is going on, feel free to enlighten me.

In particular, note in the following file, produced with another math product,

that (1) the inline assignment statements and their results do not include a repition of the assignment itself, (2) the units don't have square braces around them (I don't recall seeing this in any of my texts), and (3), I can change the style of numbers to be different from variable names and units. The latter ability makes it easier for me to see numbers (values) in a sea of characters.

I am not identifying the behaviors here as "problems" as much as I am recommending that Maple be up front with the document mode and change Maple document mode to be more consistent with other word processor behaviors.
