The second day of the 2005 Maple conference was another busy day at Wilfred Laurer University. The day began with an excellent keynote presentation from Dr. Richard Gran, the CEO of Mathematical Analysis Company. His talk began with him recalling his days working on the Lunar Module for the Apollo moon missions. It was quite a pleasure to see this man speak. The day continued with four parallel contributed sessions covering a wide range of topics. These presentations were being given by people from all over the world. It isn’t often that so many people with such different backgrounds can get together and talk about their common interest, Maple. After the first set of contributed sessions, the conference moved to the atrium of the WLU science building. Many conference attendees had set up posters showing off the work that they have done with Maple. For two hours, everyone was able to share the provided lunch and discuss all of the different problems that they are using Maple to solve. Following the poster session, was another set of contributed talks. I was most interested to see the talk on Parametric Polymorphism Optimization for Deeply Nested Types in Computer Algebra. This was because it was being presented by a graduate student from the University of Western Ontario, my home university. The conference was then closed with a final Maplesoft Showcase where several Maplesoft technologies where demonstrated. These included the Maple Professional Toolbox for Labview; the new MAA content for Maple T.A. as well as MapleNET 10. The next two days will be filled with several different training sessions where I will be assisting in helping people to learn Maple. The main part of the conference went great and I look forward to the next two days of training.
