After a bit of waiting (I literally didn't even touch Maple between posting the original comment and this edit) E.l started working, but E.a didn't.

I tried using simplify on one of the vectors I'm trying to product, and simplify(r) gave me the same message, implying that a second variable is expected in a function with only one variable? After some fidgeting, it randomly decided that it wants to work.
