I also encountered this issue with Maple 2018 and Ubuntu 16.04.1.

In the installation process, it says "Matlab detected" (or similar). The checkbox on that page installs the Matlab-Maple-Integration. By uninstalling Maple and reinstalling with the check box disabled, the problem did not come up any more.

If you do not need that integration, my solution could be easier than manually linking the libraries, which could also affect Matlab.

I remember there was an error in the installation process of the Matlab integration, so perhaps there are combinations of Matlab-/Maple-versions, that are not compatible.

When trying to display long results directly in Maple, you might freeze the program.

You could just save the expression to a text file and then look into this with your favourite text editor.
