Question: calculation of the standard deviation

Hi all,

My problem is not in the calculation of the standard deviation of a uniform distribution, but in where they got the formula. I find it easier for me to learn if I understand the formulas as well as knowing where to plug in the numbers. In the equation Std. deviation = (b-a)/ square root of 12, where did the square root of 12 come from?
 f(x) = 1/(b-a) for a < x < b

                 = 0 elsewhere.

E(f(x))=?

Var(f(x))=?

I can not handle piecewise within the integral, and then perform simplification
 to achieve results.
